Although a limited number of events, not on the Olympic Programme, were given World Championship status in 1976 and 1980, the first World Championships proper were held in 1983. Originally held every 4 years the event is now held every 2. Nationalities given are those of the countries the athletes were representing at the time of the event, with their nationality under today's political boundaries given in brackets where otherwise unclear.
Ethiopia has participated in eleven previous editions of the world championships starting from the very first editions in Helsinki, Finland.
